NFL Point Spread Explained

NFL Point Spread Explained
© Dan4th
With the NFL being the one sport in the US with the highest betting, it is probably a surprise to know that many people do not understand betting or how the odds and favorites are chosen. For the bookmakers, the best outcome is to have people place bets on both teams. What is even better is that the same number of people place bets on each team...the bookie can't lose because the bookie makes a profit from commissions. The punter who doesn't understand NFL Point Spread will most certainly be the loser.

When two teams play a sport there is usually one who is the most likely to win and one who is the most likely to lose. In spread betting, the points are added, or subtracted from the score. Depending upon who the bet was placed for, the final tally dictates the betting winners and losers.

If the gambler places bets on the favorite, the favorite team must 'give the points away' and still score enough to beat the score of the underdog who 'takes the points'.

It is all supposed to even up the betting odds; of course, if you go just to watch the game you are always a winner.

SEC meeting talks all about college football expansion

Mark Richt, Georgia coach expect college football expansion to be a topic of debate with Commissioner Mike Slive. The SEC even after four straight national football titles has not discussed popular topic of conference expansion. For the first time ever, football and basketball coaches will be meeting for expansion.

Mark Richt stated:

My guess is it's not going to happen this year, that's soon to me. Could it happen next year? I imagine it could. I think commissioner Slive is going to study it, is going to know everything about it, and if he feels like we need to make a move to expand, we'll do it. I trust the best decision for our league will be made.

Mike Slive doesn't seem to be eager about divulging details regarding expansion evaluation process.

Mike Slive stated:

Given our success over the last decade, we're pretty comfortable as I think you all know. Having said that, if there's a significant shift in the conference paradigm, we will be thoughtful, we'll be strategic and our goal is for us to maintain our position as one of the most successful conferences in the country. People have been drawing inferences from that. They'll continue to draw interferences from that, but really, that's about all we're going to say about it this week.

Steve Spurrier, South Carolina coach stated that expansion from twelve to sixteen teams could lead to dilution of long standing football rivalries.
