2008 Mock Draft - Top 15
Filed in archive NFL Draft by Kyle Smith on January 23, 2008

1. Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE: The Dolphins run a 3-4 front, and though Glenn Dorsey could make the transition, he is more suited to playing in a 4-3 front. Current Dolphins star DE Jason Taylor is 33, so the 'Phins may grab Long, who is a prototypical 3-4 defensive end.
2. St. Louis Rams - Glenn Dorsey, DT: Rams fans may not be in love with this selection, but it has nothing to do with the player. The team has targeted defensive tackles in the first round before, only to come up bust (Damione Lewis, Jimmy Kennedy). Still, if Dorsey is the real deal, he and last year's first-rounder, DT Adam Carriker, should be the solutions the team has yearned for most of this decade.
3.* Atlanta Falcons - Darren McFadden, RB: With the team seemingly set to announce Jacksonville defensive coordinator Mike Smith as their new head coach, he will want to instill the same type of philosophy - defense and running the ball - that has made Jacksonville what they are. True, the team needs a QB in the worst way, but they may grind it out with Byron Leftwich and take the premier talent in the whole draft.
4.* Oakland Raiders - Jake Long, OT: With QB JaMarcus Russell soon to take over at QB, the best thing he can have is a very good offensive line. While the team hasn't gotten what they thought out of Robert Gallery, that shouldn't preclude them from snatching Long with this pick.
5.* Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan McClady, OT: The Chiefs need an offensive lineman badly, to help protect frail QB Brodie Croyle and improve a running game that was last in the NFL in 2007.
6. New York Jets - Vernon Gholston, LB/DE: Gholston is the only man to have beaten Jake Long for a sack this year, and he will be a good fit for the Jets as a pass rushing linebacker.
7. New England Patriots - Aqib Talib, CB: The corner from Kansas is big at 6'1, and would be an ideal fit to replace Asante Samuel, who most assume will be gone. Though he has a tendency to get burned deep from time to time, he has the size to match up with nearly any of the NFL's new breed of big wide receivers.
8. Baltimore Ravens - Matt Ryan, QB: The team will try, once again, to find it's QB of the present and future, and Ryan is the top prospect at that position, though Brian Brohm may sneak his way into the discussion.
9. Cincinnati Bengals - Sedrick Ellis, DT: Cincinnati needs defense, period, especially at defensive tackle. They got a measly 22 sacks, last in the NFL, and Ellis can help remedy that.
10. New Orleans Saints - Mike Jenkins, CB: New Orleans was terrible against the pass, ranking 30th in the league. They also intercepted just 13 passes - only four other teams had less.
11. Buffalo Bills - Limas Sweed, WR: Sweed could be the perfect complement to the 5'10 Lee Evans for the Bills. At 6'4, Sweed has the size that will be difficult for corners to match up with and give young QB Trent Edwards another option, especially in the red zone.
12. Denver Broncos - Kentwan Balmer, DT: The Broncos desperately need solid defensive tackles, and the fast-rising Balmer fits the mold with Dorsey and Ellis already gone.
13. Carolina Panthers - Brian Brohm, QB: When a team has to rely upon Vinny Testaverde, you know there's a need there. Jake Delhomme is coming off of major surgery, and he is 33 years old. The time has come to find a suitable replacement, and Brohm, who had been considered a top-10 pick, falls right into their lap.
14. Chicago Bears - Andre Woodson, QB: Speaking of needing quarterbacks, the Bears definitely qualify in that category. Hopefully, Woodson will cure that problem and loyal Bears fans can begin to forget about the Rex Grossman Era.
15. Detroit Lions - Calais Campbell, DE: The more defense the Lions obtain, the better. They were next to last against the pass in 2007, and 23rd against the run. Defensive ends Dewayne White and Jared DeVries each had 6.5 sacks for the team last season, but that is a little misleading as they each had three sacks in a single game, accounting for nearly half their total.
(* = Atlanta, Oakland and Kansas City will have a coin flip to determine the order, though K.C. must select behind Oakland)
