As is usually the case this time of year, college football begins it's annual process of hiring and firing coaches. A lot of action has taken place recently, so let's spend some time sorting things out.
- Arkansas' Houston Nutt (pictured) resigned from the school after a tumultuous couple of years, but he quickly signed on to coach Mississippi. Needless to say, Razorback fans are probably circling October 25, 2008 on their calendar – which will mark Nutt's return to Fayetteville with Ole Miss to take on his former squad.
- The Mississippi job was only open because they fired Ed Orgeron. This, after the coach was previously told his job was safe. Orgeron was known for his recruiting, and was featured prominently in the book The Blind Side, by Moneyball author Michael Lewis, and Meat Market: Inside the Smash-Mouth World of college football recruiting, by Bruce Feldman.
- Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey's teams were never bad, but they were never great either. The Yellow Jackets were always somewhere in the middle, which cost Gailey his job. It didn't help that he never beat Georgia.
- At Duke, coach Ted Roof got the axe after compiling a 6-45 record during his time there.
- Texas A&M's Dennis Franchione, he of the $1,200 newsletter, stepped down, officially, but was probably led out the door by the school. They have subsequently hired Mike Sherman, former coach of the Packers.
- Obviously, Bill Callahan was let go the minute the sun rose following Nebraska's final game.
- Also, Phil Bennett is out at SMU, Guy Morriss was fired at Baylor, Jeff Bower is done at Southern Miss, Joe Novak retired from Northern Illinois and Bill Doba is done at Washington State.

Any word on a coaching change for Syracuse?
No, but you’d think it would be coming sometime soon.
