Brian DeMarco is a broken man, and he's just 35.
DeMarco retired from a brief career as an offensive lineman, with spine and hip injuries so extensive that he had to have a titanium rod inserted into his back.
A mere shadow of his former self, the hobbled DeMarco is asking the NFL Players Association for disability pay. DeMarco believes he's facing a lifetime of gargantuan medical costs, and he doesn't have the money.
Gene Upshaw, head of the NFLPA, isn't offering the assistance DeMarco wants. Upshaw claims the NFLPA is not turning its back on DeMarco and other disabled players. In fact, the NFLPA produced copies of checks sent to DeMarco over a seven-month period, totaling close to $10,000 for help with DeMarco's mortgage.
This isn't enough, according to DeMarco, who has new advocates, now joining his fight against Upshaw and the NFLPA.
Former NFL player and coach Mike Ditka and the Gridiron Greats, a new organization that represents needy former nfl players have begun to speak out against Upshaw and the NFLPA. They say the money the NFLPA has sent is not the issue. Rather, it's the enormous future health care costs that DeMarco faces.
DeMarco and his family -- a wife and two children -- have exhausted the millions of dollars DeMarco made in his four-year NFL career.
Is this the NFLPA's fault? Is it the NFL's? Mike Ditka says, yes, and he wants new NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to do something about it.
Taking care of these disabled players should be Goodell's legacy, according to Ditka.
There are many other issues to consider, though.
For example, is it the NFL's responsibility to manage the millions of dollars that players make? Or should DeMarco have done a better job providing for his future?
It's an interesting philosophical debate.
Meanwhile, Brian DeMarco and his family still need help, and someone in the professional football family needs to give it to them.

I have a 6-year-old kid who, along with myself, absolutely loves football. This article scares me in the way that, if my kid ends up being good enough to play on the NFL level, I have to question whether or not I want to encourage him to play. What's funny is people don't understand that the NFL game doesn't create these lifelong problems. It's the lifelong wear and tear from the age of seven, and the NFL just continues to add punishment on a level that most don't realize. His four year career could've been at least 15 years. They do need to do something about this.

I have known Brian DeMarco since childhood and it breaks my heart to see him go through any of this. He worked so hard to fulfill his dreams to have it all come crashing down on him due to medical reasons. He was always so strong physically and emotionally and it's hard to imagine him any other way. I hope the NFL comes through for Brian and his family, he does not deserve to not only suffer physically but then to have to suffer financially. People who make comments about he should have planned better for his future have obviously never had a serious illness without medical coverage. It takes no time at all to have enormous bills. The NFL needs to make this right!

I was a classmate of Brian's in High School in Ohio and attended Michigan State University with him as well.
The man has earned millions and millions of dollars. Where are his investments? Why didn't he sink part of his income in health insurance instead of a Florida mansion and good times?
I feel bad for him. I feel bad for his two kids...wait, his five kids. The NFLPA press release seems to ignore his kids by his first wife that Brian never supports.
The begging in front of the media is just ridiculous. I am truly embarrassed and ashamed for him.

HBO's 'Real Sports' just did a story on Brian DeMarco and his family. It was tragic, how they had to live, after the millions were spent on surgeries and medical care. If he is faking it, he has the help of surgeons and I don't believe that is the case at all. My GOD, his family had to live, for a time, in a storage container. If this is how the NFL treats the people who get injured in the workplace, maybe we should boycott the Super Bowl and watch them get some responsibility very soon thereafter.
I'm going to send them a check as HBO said they are living month to month and using pawnshops to buy groceries for the kids.
It was never about mismanaging money....major surgeries cost money, medical care costs money, families cost money....and if this was a Terry Bradshaw or a higher profile person, they wouldn't be so quick to dismiss him with $300. SHAME ON THE NFL!

The fight to help these players continues, and it's important to get the word out about the recent window opened by the NFL to help retired players.

Sofia you break my heart! I knew your parents in the 1990s and had high hopes that all would be well. Your family is a strong one and I have prayed often that your family will come through this.
