Analyzing the Cleveland Browns

The Browns shocked most NFL observers on draft day. Taking offensive tackle Joe Thomas with the third overall pick wasn't a surprise; it was the trade into the bottom of the first round to select Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn that turned the 2007 draft on its ear.

Thomas, along with free agentlinks acquisition Eric Steinbach, the return of injured tackle Ryan Tucker and potential recovery of All-Pro center LeCharles Bently, gives the Browns the most-improved offensive lines in the NFL. Should Quinn get a shot to start in his rookie year, this formidable group will give him a good opportunity to be productive.

Although there may be an interesting quarterback battle in training camp, it may not matter who wins the starting job. Charlie Frye is the incumbent and favorite to beat out Quinn.

More important to the Browns success on offense, which has been the team's Achilles heel, is the entire unit adapting to a new system. This means more productivity from receiver Braylon Edwards, more yards-per-catch from star tight end Kellen Winslow, Jr., and an instant contribution from new starting tailback, Jamal Lewis -- a free agent from Baltimore.

The Browns defense is already very solid and could be better if rookie defensive back Eric Wright can stay out of trouble and live up to the huge expectations that the Browns have for him.

Josh Cribbs gives Cleveland one of the most electrifying kick returners in the NFL, and the defensive special teams unit is very steady.

The Cleveland Browns appear to be dramatically improved, but as is the case in the NFL, it will take time for them to gel. Look for a much better year, with seven to nine wins.
