Current RB's Who Are Future H.O.F?

Filed in archive NFL by Kyle Smith on June 6, 2008

As ESPN.com gave out their list of the 10 greatest running backs of all-time, it brought up the question: which active running backs could one day wind up in Canton? Let's take a look at some possibilities.

Can Make A Case Right Now

LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers: The no-brainer of the group. Tomlinson is already 18th on the all-time rushing list, with 10,650 yards. LT is 3rd in all-time rushing TD's with 115, and with 9 more, he'll rank second on the list. His 129 total TD's are 7th all-time.

Edgerrin Jameslinks, Arizona Cardinals: Edge has somewhat quietly had a superb career. He is 13th on the all-time rushing list, and he could very easily get to number 7 on the list, passing players like Marshall Faulk and Jim Brown on the way. He is also in the top 20 all-time in rushing TD's.

Fred Taylor, Jacksonville Jaguars: The longtime Jacksonville back is an interesting case. If he stays healthy, he'll wind up in the top 15 all-time in rushing yards. But he's just 35th in all-time rushing TD's, and 76th in total TD's. Not to mention his lone Pro Bowl appearance. So though he is a longshot, he should at least be discussed.

Shaun Alexander, No Team: There's no doubt Alexander benefited from running behind Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson for many years in Seattle, but he was a great runner in his own right. Still without a team this season, Alexander is 25th in rushing yards in NFL history, and 7th in rushing TD's.

Maybe, If They Keep It Up

Clinton Portis, Washington Redskins: Something that may surprise people is that Portis is just 26 years old. And his numbers for that age are outstanding - with a solid year, he will rank in the top 30 all-time in rushing yards, and with 8 more rushing TD's, he'll be in the top 25 all-time in that category.

Steven Jackson, St. Louis Rams: Granted, this is solely based on projection, but at the age of 24, and his skill set, Jackson has a lot of upside. If he rushes for about 1,400 yards this season, he'll be in the top 80 in all-time rushing yards, and 9 rushing TD's (no small feat), he'll be in the top 100 in that statistic.

Larry Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs: Johnson is probably the longest shot of any of these players because he got off to such a late start. At 28 years old, LJ needs a few phenomenal years from here on out to have a realistic chance. However, he does have 50 rushing TD's in his career, and he can quickly move up the list, as he currently sits 55th all-time.
