Football Stats & Records You May Not Have Known
Filed in archive NFL on March 27, 2008

Records and statistics are big in sports like baseball and basketball, but often get overlooked in the game of football. For example, take three guesses on who has the most career interceptions of any player in pro football history. The answer is Paul Krause, with 81. The player with the second most picks? Emlen Tunnell, of course, with 79. That said, let's look at some other facts and figures.
- Jake Plummer has more career passing yards than 16 different Hall of Fame quarterbacks, including Len Dawson, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Namath
- Ahman Green and Bo Jackson are the only two players ever to have more than one run of at least 90 yards.
- Only two players in NFL History have averaged at least 80 receiving yards per game: Torry Holt (83.5) and Anquan Boldin (80.3). Jerry Rice is seventh (75.6)
- Dave Krieg is 10th all-time in TD passes. He threw 20 or more TD passes five times, but he also threw 20 or more interceptions five times.
- There have been 98 combined punt and kickoff returns of 100 yards or longer. But only one of those was a punt return: a 103-yard effort by Robert Bailey in 1993.
- Hall of Fame QB Bobby Layne threw 47 more interceptions (243) than TD passes (196). Four different times he threw more INT's than TD passes, but still made the Pro Bowl or All-Pro team.
- Tony Dorsett is the only player in pro football history to have a 99-yard run, which he did in 1982.
- Of the top 20 all-time leaders in career completion percentage, 17 are still active, including Chad Pennington, who is the leader with 65.6%
- Of the top 50 leaders in all-time receptions, only two are running backs: Marshall Faulk and Larry Centers.
- Deion Sanders has scored the most career TD's (19) that were not a result of an offensive play. Devin Hester is tied for sixth (12).
