Heisman Voters: "We'll Make Up Our Own Criteria!"
Most of us are familiar with the saying, "you can't fix stupid," right? Because it fits at least one Heisman Trophy voter (and probably more) perfectly.

Before we get into that, let's be reminded of what the Heisman ballot says, according to ESPN.com's Gene Wojciechowski:

"I hereby designate (name, school) as my first choice to receive the Heisman Memorial Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the United States for 2007."

Pretty simple. Most outstanding player, and that's it. But some voters take it amongst themselves to make up their own standards, seemingly out of the blue. For example, in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel's chances to win the Heisman, a columnist from the San Bernardino Sun named Paul Oberjuerge had this to say about his voting method:

"I'm one of those people who very grudgingly accepts non-traditional football powers into the inner circle for rankings and awards and major bowls. Missouri certainly fits the non-traditional profile."

Huh? That's not just dumb, that's Of Mice and Men Lennie dumb. So Daniel won't get his vote because Missouri hasn't been a traditional power? What the hell does that have to do with 2007?

Look, if somebody doesn't want to vote for Daniel or Tim Tebow or Darren McFadden or anybody else because they believe there are three better players to fill in on the ballot, then that's fine. But to exclude someone based on a school's history is nonsensical.

That's like saying you shouldn't vote for matt hollidaylinks or David Wright for MVP because the Rockies and Mets don't have enough tradition. Or maybe voting for Brett Favre over Tom Brady for MVP strictly because the Packers have been around since the 1920's, and the Patriots didn't start until 40 years later in the AFL.

Hopefully Mr. Oberjuerge is out petting the rabbits when it's time to turn the Heisman ballots in.
