How Do You Spell Credibility? It's Not B-E-N-G....

Filed in archive NFL by Kyle Smith on August 20, 2008

Way to go Cincinnati Bengals. Your fan base must be thrilled that you signed wide receiver Chris Henry. He sure is talented, and fans like it when their teams sign players who can help them win. Here's the thing, though: Didn't you just kick him off the squad in April for being arrested ... again?

What's that? A second chance, you say? Okay, but didn't Henry already have one of those? In fact, he's had about three second chances, what with being arrested five different times. Now he's learned his lesson? Look, it's not that Chris Henry should never be allowed to play in the NFL again. He's not the worst person to walk the earth (though he may be one of the most immature). The problem is, Bengals, that you now have zero credibility with anyone, anywhere. After giving Henry the boot, your team gets a few injuries, and there was no one else?

How can anyone in the organization honestly warn their players that there are consequences for poor conduct when you just re-sign a guy you kicked off the team? Now they know that if a few injuries pop up, even if they were expelled for their behavior, they can still get a job.

For Henry's sake more than anyone, let's hope he gets things turned around. Because being out of a job and simply hanging out probably isn't the best thing for Chris Henry. But if he does not, and he burns the team, what do you say to your fans then?
