News Around NFL Mini-Camp

Filed in archive NFL by Kyle Smith on May 12, 2008

The newest batch of NFL rookies had their official initiations into the NFL as mini-camps took place with numerous NFL teams this past weekend. Here's a look at what went down.

- Things got a bit testy at Baltimore Ravenslinks camp, as there was a fight between, well, everybody apparently. The AP reported that almost all 85 players were involved in one way or another in the fracas. After that one stopped, there was a lesser altercation between defensive backs Corey Ivy and Frank Walker. DE Trevor Pryce wasn't too happy about it all, and had the best line of the day: "So now we've proved I'm tough, you're tough, hooray, we're all tough." (Associated Press)

- Both WR Mario Manningham and QB Andre Woodson (pictured) were injured atNY Giants camp, though the maladies are not serious. Woodson pulled a quad, and Manningham got a hip flexor. Sixth round pick Woodson did not have a great start before that either, as he was intercepted on his first ever pro pass in camp. (ESPN)

- The Detroit Lions' second round pick, linebacker Jordan Dizon, had a great weekend of practice, and he may start at middle linebacker in the fall. (Royal Oak Daily Tribune)

- In San Diego, an interesting note was made that Antonio Cromartie practiced punt returns. It may just be an early experiment, but he obviously has all the physical skills necessary to be great at it. (San Diego Union Tribune)

- San Francisco 49ers linebacker Manny Lawson is blogging, and he talks about mini-camp. Unfortunately he is still recovering from a knee injury and wasn't allowed to practice yet. So he wrote, " I tried to soak up as much as I could from watching and I tried to help coach up Parys Haralson and Jay Moore on things that I was seeing out there. So that's really the end of my discussion about mini camp." (49ers.com)
