NFL Division Previews: AFC South

Filed in archive NFL by Kyle Smith on July 24, 2008

The NFL season is approaching quickly, and with that, EZB will be providing previews of each division in the league. Up today: the AFC South.

Indianapolis Colts

Why They Might Win the Division
Despite a creaky Marvin Harrison, the Colts still have a plethora of offensive talent, both at the skill positions and along the offensive line. They scored the third most points in the league last season, while giving up the fewest. Even if both of those numbers reverse a bit, it should still be enough for Indy to make the playoffs.

Why They Might Not Win the Division
Their run defense was average last year, ranking 15th in rushing yards allowed per game. They can't allow that to deteriorate, or Manning and Co. will be forced to watch from the sidelines. And of course, should Peyton suffer an injury, all bets are off.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Why They Might Win the Division
The Jags had a top-10 offense and defense in 2007, they finally found their QB in David Garrard after years with Byron Leftwich, and Fred Taylor is still going strong with Maurice Jones-Drew in the backfield. And their secondary should only get better with the addition of Drayton Florence in free agency.

Why They Might Not Win the Division
Trading away DT Marcus Stroud was a risk, albeit a calculated one. Rookie DE's Quentin Groves and Derrick Harvey need to be able to get to the quarterback, because only DE Paul Spicer had more than four sacks last year. They also lost their leading tackler from a year ago in S Sammy Knight.

Houston Texans

Why They Might Win the Division
Houston has a load of potential on defense, and despite their relatively poor statistical numbers from a year ago, it is absolutely possible they could turn that around in a big way in 2008. QB Matt Schaub is still unproven but has shown flashes of great play, especially with WR Andre Johnson, one of the best in the game when healthy.

Why They Might Not Win the Division
There are big-time questions at running back and in the secondary. Is Ahman Green going to get the bulk of carries? Chris Brown? Rookie Steve Slaton? They will have to decide who, if anyone, will be the main back. The secondary, who ranked 25th in pass defense last season, is facing a much bigger challenge, especially because CB Dunta Smith is probably going to miss the first six games of the season while still recovering from leg injuries.

Why They Might Win the Division
The Titans probably have more talent at running back than anyone else in the league, and last season averaged more than 130 yards on the ground per game. Their defense was a top-5 unit last season and shouldn't see much drop-off, largely due to the fact they retained DT Albert Haynesworth.

Why They Might Not Win the Division
Vince Young is the worst passer in the league - not the worst QB - and even if he could throw, he's got no receivers to throw to. If Young and the unproven talent at wide out don't develop rather quickly, it will be far too easy for opposing defenses to load up the box and simply wait for the run.
