NFL Draft
by Kyle Smith on March 24, 2008
We are another week closer to the 2008 NFL Draft, so we continue to update our mock draft, with new information and new rumors being thrown around, as is typical this time of year.
1. Miami Dolphins - DE Chris Long, Virginia
- Howie's kid represents the type of attitude that Bill Parcells wants to rebuild the team around.
2. St. Louis Rams - OL Jake Long, Michigan
- According to ESPN.com reporter Matt Mosley, Long to St. Louis "seems like a done deal."
3. Atlanta Falcons - QB Matt Ryan, Boston College
- This move still makes the most sense, even if doubts about Ryan are becoming more public.
4. Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden, Arkansas
- Al Davis loves speed, and McFadden brings it to give the team a promising QB/RB combination for a long time.
5. Kansas City Chiefs - DT Sedrick Ellis, USC
- The Chiefs need an offensive tackle in the worst way, but the position is deep and they can find one in a later round. Meanwhile, Ellis' stock has been soaring.
6. New York Jets - OLB Vernon Gholston, Ohio State
- A possible ferocious pass rusher to line up opposite newly acquired Calvin Pace.
7. New England Patriots - CB Leodis McKelvin, Troy
- Belichick and company lost both Asante Samuel and Randall Gay to free agency, so a corner makes sense here.
8. Baltimore Ravens - DT Glenn Dorsey, LSU
- DT Haloti Ngata and Dorsey create a potentially devastating interior combo.
9. Cincinnati Bengals - DE Derrick Harvey, Florida
- The Bengals did sign Antwan Odom, but they need as many defensive playmakers as they can acquire.
10. New Orleans Saints - CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tenn. State
- New Orleans solidifies a leaky secondary with the player who has risen up draft boards faster than any other.
11. Buffalo Bills - WR Malcolm Kelly, Oklahoma
- I'll stick with Kelly here even though his stock is dropping a bit because of his late Pro Day in Norman (April 9).
12. Denver Broncos - OT Ryan Clady, Boise State
- The Broncos desperately need blockers on the edges of the O-Line, and Clady fixes that.
13. Carolina Panthers - DE Phillip Merling, Clemson
- With Mike Rucker no longer around, Merling comes in to be the complement to Julius Peppers.
14. Chicago Bears - OT Chris Williams, Vanderbilt
- The Bears need to protect Rex Grossman, who makes enough poor throws when the defense isn't pressuring him. And maybe if bigger holes are opened up, RB Cedric Benson might actually run through them.
15. Detroit Lions - RB Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois
- Unless they think Tatum Bell is the answer, Detroit gets the second best (some say best) running back in the draft.
16. Arizona Cardinals - LB Keith Rivers, USC
- Arizona needs linebackers, and snags the best one in the draft.
17. Minnesota Vikings - OT Jeff Otah, Pittsburgh
- With the rap sheet against Bryant McKinnie growing, Otah may be a necessity here.
18. Houston Texans - WR DeSean Jackson, Cal
- Jackson will line up opposite Andre Johnson to give Matt Schaub two vertical threats.
19. Philadelphia Eagles - CB Mike Jenkins, South Florida
- Philly has been shopping Lito Sheppard and seems determined to trade him.
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - CB Aqib Talib, Kansas
- After losing Brian Kelly to Detroit, the Bucs need a corner. Talib can get burned because he plays an aggressive, gambling style, but the Cover 2 should limit that as it takes away the amount of man-to-man he'll play.
21. Washington Redskins - DE Calais Campbell, Miami
- Phillip Daniels is in his 13th year and was only moderately successful in 2007, so the time has come for them to get younger at the position.
22. Dallas Cowboys - WR Mario Manningham, Michigan
- His poor 40 times at the combine were offset a bit by his much better showing at Michigan's recent pro day.
23. Pittsburgh Steelers - G Branden Albert, Virginia
- Albert should prove to be a solid replacement for Alan Faneca and is widely considered the best guard in the draft who could even play tackle.
24. Tennessee Titans - WR Limas Sweed, Texas
- His injuries have been a concern, but if he's healthy, Sweed is a prototypical new-age big, fast receiver. Not to mention a former teammate of Vince Young's.
25. Seattle Seahawks - TE Fred Davis, USC
- Seattle needs a tight end to run the west coast offense to it's full potential, so the choice is Davis.
26. Jacksonville Jaguars - DT Kentwan Balmer, North Carolina
- The Jags signed Jimmy Kennedy after trading Marcus Stroud. Believe me, they need Balmer.
27. San Diego Chargers - OT Gosder Cherilus, Boston College
- San Diego needs some bodies up front, and Cherilus will team up with Marcus McNeil to form a young and talented tackle duo on the edges of the offensive line.
28. Dallas Cowboys - RB Felix Jones
- The new lightning to Marion Barber's thunder.
29. San Francisco 49ers - WR Devin Thomas, Michigan State
- San Francisco needs playmakers that can go vertical in new coordinator Mike Martz's offense.
30. Green Bay Packers - TE Dustin Keller, Purdue
- Keller has all the physical tools and will be perfect in Green Bay's wide open offense.
31. New England Patriots - Pick Forfeited
32. New York Giants - S Kenny Phillips, Miami
- New York needs a safety with Gibril Wilson leaving, and Sammy Knight should only be a temporary replacement.
