NFL's Biggest Underachievers
Seven weeks into the football season, we have a pretty good idea of who is who. Some teams are absolutely rolling (Patriots, Colts) while others are already looking forward to April's draft (Dolphins, Rams).

Just as some teams have under-performed, so have a number of players. Let's take a look at some numbers and seek out the season's biggest underachievers. For the sake of this argument, we'll leave guys out whose seasons have been significantly altered by injury.

QB Drew Brees: New Orleans was supposed to be a contender for the Super Bowl this season, but so far they have proven to be anything but. There are a number of factors leading to the Saints struggles, and one of them can be found at quarterback. While Brees has played better of late, he is still sporting a passer rating of 69.1. He has a good completion percentage of 64.4, but the most telling stat are his touchdown and interception numbers. He has thrown 5 TD's compared to 10 INT's.

RB Cedric Benson: The Chicago Bears traded Thomas Jones in order to give Benson a chance to live up to his lofty draft status. So far, he has failed to deliver. He is 28th in the league averaging just 59.4 yards per game. He has more fumbles (3) than touchdowns (2), and he has proven not to possess much explosiveness. Benson is averaging a paltry 3.1 yards per carry, and his longest run of the season is a mere 16 yards. Those aren't the numbers that are expected out of a player picked 4th overall.

WR Lee Evans: Evans was an emerging star in Buffalo the last couple of years, due to his game-breaking speed and ability to take it to the house. This year, Evans hasn't caught a single TD pass, and he is averaging just over 35 yards per game. Evans has only 17 receptions, and he his yards per catch average is just 12.4.

WR Matt Jones: The Jaguars wide receiver probably isn't the biggest bust of the first round of the 2005 nfl draft, that honor belongs to WR Mike Williams, but he isn't far off. Smitten with his speed, the Jacksonville snagged the former college QB with the 21st pick, and have gotten little out of their investment. So far, Jones has caught a whopping 8 passes this season. He has just 73 yards receiving, no touchdowns, and a 9.3 yards per reception average.
