NFL's Worst DB Combos

Filed in archive NFL by Kyle Smith on June 04, 2008

In the last of our series on the teams with the worst grouping of positional players, we turn our attention to the secondary.

Cleveland Browns: The Browns filled a lot of defensive holes in the offseason, but one thing they didn't do is acquire defensive backs. With Leigh Bodden no longer on Cleveland's roster after being traded to Detroit in the offseason as part of the Shaun Rogers deal, the team is perilously thin at the position. Last season, the Browns allowed the third most passing TD's in the NFL, and were in the bottom ten in passing yards allowed. Second year player Eric Wright is likely going to be one of the players counted on to help the most.

Detroit Lions: Detroit's secondary was awful in 2007, allowing 32 TD passes against them, tying New Orleans for most in the NFL. They also gave up the second most passing yards per game in football, just behind Minnesota, and were the only team to allow 70% of passes to get completed against them. So Matt Millen went out and tried to correct that by bringing in the aforementioned Bodden, along with Brian Kelly, formerly of Tampa, and Dwight Smith, who was cut by the Vikings. However, there is reason to be skeptical about this group. Part of it is that Millen brought them in, but also because Kelly has played for over a decade, and Smith was released by the only team that allowed more passing yards then Detroit did.

Houston Texans: The Texans had respectable numbers, but they lack playmakers outside of Dunta Robinson, who missed 7 games last season. Houston had an NFL worst 11 interceptions, and the secondary accounted for just 7 of those. The team has spent many of it's recent top picks on defensive lineman, and has virtually ignored it's secondary. In fact, in the entire draft history of the Texans, the team has only picked two defensive backs in the first, second or third rounds: Robinson in the first round in 2004, and Antwaun Molden in the third round this year.

Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings were so good against the run, teams decided that passing was a better option, putting the ball up about 40 times per game against them. Problem is, Minnesota wasn't real successful at stopping it. The Vikings allowed the most passing yards in football, which is forgivable considering the number of attempts they faced, but they also allowed opponents to complete 64.2% of their passes against them, the fifth worst mark in the league. Minnesota has some very good players in Antoine Winfield and Darren Sharper, but they, like the other teams here, need more playmakers, as their 15 picks were in the bottom third of the league.

New Orleans Saints: The secondary, especially cornerback, was an enormous problem for the Saints all season long in 2007. Jason David got burned so much, people were roastinglinks marshmallows off his helmet after games. The Saints tied the Lions for most TD passes allowed, were third to last in passing yards allowed, and in the bottom five of interceptions. Randall Gay was brought in from New England in an attempt to remedy the situation, but it could be tough going again this year in New Orleans.
