Possible Upsets For Top 10 Teams

Filed in archive College Football by Kyle Smith on August 6, 2008

The college football season is quickly approaching, as things will get underway at the end of August. Undoubtedly, upsets will happen shortly thereafter. So here's a gander at some possible upsets that the top 10 teams in the country (so far) may be susceptible to. Is it unlikely that these upsets take place? Of course. But impossible? Not if you think back to last year and remember Appalachian St. defeating Michigan or Stanford beating USC.

1. Georgia Bulldogs - Upset Alert: Central Michigan, September 6. The Chippewas are coming off an 8-5 season, and they return 16 starters - 8 on offense, 8 on defense. But the most important returning player for the club is QB Dan LeFevour. A sophomore last season, LeFevour was fourth in the nation in total offense, ahead of players like Tim Tebow, Chase Daniel, Matt Ryan and Brian Brohm. He threw for over 3,600 yards, ran for more than 1,100, and combined to run and throw for 46 touchdowns.

2. USC Trojans - Upset Alert: At Arizona, October 25. The Wildcats were tenth in the country in passing last season, and figure to be that good once again, as QB Willie Tuitama returns. They only lost to USC by seven points last year in the Coliseum, and this year the game will be in Arizona.

3. Ohio State Buckeyeslinks - Upset Alert: Troy, September 20. This game is the week after the Buckeyes play USC, so it's possible they will have a bit of a letdown game. And Troy is no pushover, as they were 16th in total offense last season, and 44th in scoring defense as well.

4. Florida Gators - Upset Alert: Hawaii, August 30. The only reason for picking this game is that Florida will go up against the unknown. The Warriors have a new head coach, a new quarterback and the memory of getting thumped by SEC team Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

5. Oklahoma Sooners - Upset Alert: Cincinnati, September 6. The Bearcats are a legit team who were 16th in scoring offense and 13th in scoring defense in 2007. They led the Big East in turnover margin and sacks, and also excelled in special teams.

6. Missouri Tigers - Upset Alert: Illinois, August 30. The Illini are coming off a Rose Bowl trip, and return players like QB Juice Williams. The game is at a neutral field in St. Louis, so the fan base should be equal, and the two squads played a fairly even match last season in the same venue.

7. Clemson Tigers - Upset Alert: Alabama, August 30. The Crimson Tide bring nine offensive starters back to Nick Saban's squad, who will likely be improved after a 7-6 season in 2007.

8. West Virginia Mountaineers - Upset Alert: At Colorado, September 18. West Virginia is likely still trying to find it's way after a tumultuous offseason that saw head coach Rich Rodriguez depart for Michigan. And Colorado is likely on the upswing with head coach Dan Hawkins trying to make his mark in his third year. After two cream puffs, this will be the Mountaineers first real test in the altitude, and Buffs freshman running back Darrell Scott was the number one recruit in the nation at that position.

9. LSU Tigers - Upset Alert: Appalachian State, August 30. Hey, they did it against Michigan, right? Why not two in a row?

10. Auburn Tigers - Upset Alert: At Mississippi State, September 13. They lost to the Bulldogs last year, and now that they are installing a new offense, this will be their first test using it against an SEC opponent.
