Previewing The Weekend In College Football

(1) Ohio State 24, (21) Wisconsin 14
To say that Ohio State's defense has been good is an understatement. The Buckeyes lead the nation in scoring defense, total defense and passing defense, and are fourth in rushing defense. Playing a soft schedule has helped, but those are still impressive numbers. Offensively, Buckeyes QB Todd Boeckman is third in the country in passer efficiency rating, having completed 66% of his passes and thrown 21 TD's. Meanwhile, Wisconsin QB Tyler Donovan has thrown just 12 TD's compared to 9 interceptions.
Both teams have outstanding running games, as Ohio State's Chris Wells is nearing 1,000 yards for the season and sports a 5.7 yards per carry average. Wisconsin features P.J. Hill on the ground, and he is fifteenth in the nation in rushing yards, and has 14 rushing touchdowns, good for second in the Big 10. When it comes down to it, Ohio State is playing at home, they have a great defense, and the Badgers simply don't have enough offensive firepower to pull the upset.
(3) LSU 31, (17) Alabama 28
Alabama head coach Nick Saban faces his old team in a match-up that will break a tie at the top of the SEC West. LSU has an outstanding defense, which holds opponents to about 230 yards a game, second-best in the nation. Both their passing and rushing defense is in the top five, and it is led by man-child Glen Dorsey on the defensive line. The one caveat is the team's passing offense. The Tigers bread and butter is their defense and run game, and back up QB Ryan Perrilloux is suspended, meaning the entire responsibility falls on starting QB Matt Flynn's shoulders. He has only 8 TD passes this year, and completes only 55% of his passes, so the running game needs to be on point for LSU.
Really that shouldn't be a problem vs. Alabama's run defense, which allows over 130 yards per game. In fact, their entire defense is an average unit, allowing 355 yards per game, eighth in the SEC. That means the Crimson Tide will need QB J.P. Wilson, RB Terry Grant and WR D.J. Hall to perform at their highest levels. This game will probably be close, in large part due to the game's location - Alabama - and the emotion involved. You know Saban will do everything he can to beat his former team, but the Tide don't qiute have the right pieces in place to do that.
(5) Oregon 35, (4) Arizona State 24
The most surprising thing about Arizona State is how good the team's defense has been. They Sun Devils find themselves in the top ten in scoring and rushing defense, and the top fifteen in total defense. This game features the two best offenses, statistically, in the Pac-10. Oregon especially has been a juggernaut featuring QB Dennis Dixon, a legit Heisman contender. The Ducks average nearly 525 yards and 44 points per game, both top five marks in the country. Behind Dixon and RB Jonathan Stewart
, Oregon gains over 280 yards on the ground. If Arizona State can stop Dixon and Stewart, which will be no easy task, they certainly have a chance on the road against the Ducks. But QB Rudy Carpenter is going to have to be great, and the team's defense is going to have to keep getting turnovers, as they have done through the year. The Sun Devils have picked off the most passes in the Pac-10 and have the best turnover margin. If they can do those things, ASU can keep it tight, but overcoming Dixon and Stewart will probably prove to be too tough.
