Reviewing 2005 NFL Draft
Filed in archive NFL Draft by Kyle Smith on November 12, 2007

1. San Francisco - Alex Smith, QB: Smith has not lived up to his lofty draft status. For his career, he has 19 touchdown throws and 31 interceptions, to go with a completion percentage of 54.8%.
2. Miami - Ronnie Brown, RB: Brown was finally doing what he was supposed to this year until he unfortunately tore his knee up this year. Still, he looks like a very solid choice.
3. Cleveland - Braylon Edwards, WR: Totally living up to expectations with the Browns, Edwards has become one of the league's best all-around receivers.
4. Chicago - Cedric Benson, RB: The Bears have seemingly whiffed. There have always been grumblings about Benson's attitude and desire, and it seems the critics were right. If the Bears had waited, they could have chosen from a number of good running backs from the third round on, including Frank Gore, Marion Barber, Brandon Jacobs,
5. Tampa Bay - Cadillac Williams, RB: After a great rookie season, the Caddy struggled his sophomore year, but he was rebounding nicely until getting injured this season.
6. Tennessee - Pac-Man Jones, CB: I think we're all familiar with how this has played out. Let's just move on.
7. Minnesota - Troy Williamson, WR: Supposedly the heir apparent to Randy Moss, the Vikings snagged the South Carolina speedster to be their deep threat, but he only has 70 catches and 3 TD's his whole career, including just 9 this season.
8. Arizona - Antrell Rolle, CB: Rolle's been good, but not great. He played sparingly his rookie year but performed admirably last season, compiling 82 tackles and 1 interception (he has 2 INT's for his career). A solid if unspectacular choice.
9. Washington - Carlos Rogers, CB: Rogers hasn't been bad, as he deflected 17 passes last season and scored a TD off an INT this year. Unfortunately, he's the third member of the top 10 to lose his season to a knee injury.
10. Detroit - Mike Williams, WR: The biggest bust of the draft, Williams lasted two turbulent seasons in Detroit before being traded to Oakland this off-season. After dropping a crucial fourth-down pass in October, he was released and has yet to find another team.
11. Dallas - DeMarcus Ware, OLB/DE: Ware is a Pro Bowler and only getting better off the edge in Dallas
12. San Diego - Shawne Merriman, OLB: Though he cheated by using steroids, nobody seems to care. Still, the steroids helped him achieve Pro Bowl status.
13. New Orleans - Jammal Brown, OT: Brown is also a Pro Bowl player, and anchors the offensive line for the Saints.
14. Carolina - Thomas Davis, OLB: After first trying Davis at safety, the Panthers moved him to linebacker, where he has been effective. He has 50 tackles through 9 games this season.
15. Kansas City - Derrick Johnson, OLB: A very solid player, Johnson is probably having his best year this season. He does a little bit of everything, and on top of his 57 tackles, he has deflected 4 passes, has 3 sacks, 2 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles.
16. Houston - Travis Johnson, DT: Johnson has done little and has only been mentioned for his actions after Trent Green tried to block him. The underachiever has a total of 59 tackles and 1 sack in his career.
17. Cincinnati - David Pollack, DE: Pollack suffered a severe injury early in 2006. He snapped a vertebrae on a tackle and though he is not paralyzed, he hasn't played since.
18. Minnesota - Erasmus James, DE: This was the Vikings second selection in the first round, and though he performed admirably his rookie year, collecting 4 sacks, he tore his ACL last season after 2 games. James finally came back last week.
19. St. Louis - Alex Barron, OT: Barron has been inconsistent his whole career. He has loads of talent, but doesn't always use it. Some games he looks fantastic, and others he looks lost. If he puts it all together, he can be very good, instead of very average.
20. Dallas - Marcus Spears, DE: Spears has been solid for the Cowboys, playing every game his entire career, and has 3.5 sacks lifetime while playing in Dallas' 3-4 scheme.
21. Jacksonville - Matt Jones, WR: Trying to convert a college QB into a WR, the Jaguars fell in love with his speed. He had been an okay player until this season, where, like Troy Williamson, he has only 9 receptions.
22. Baltimore - Mark Clayton, WR: Clayton was coming along until he got injured this season and missed some time. If he ever had a decent quarterback, he could be an outstanding receiver.
23. Oakland - Fabian Washington, CB: Known for his speed, Washington is part of a very solid Oakland secondary that is tough on opponent's passing games.
24. Green Bay - Aaron Rodgers, QB: The replacement for Brett Favre keeps waiting .... and waiting ... and waiting. It might be best if he was traded, because at this point, Favre doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
25. Washington - Jason Campbell, QB: The youngster is progressing nicely in the Redskins offense. He seems to be a future star.
26. Seattle - Chris Spencer, OC: Finally getting his chance, he is part of an offensive line that has been criticized this year by coach Mike Holmgren.
27. Atlanta - Roddy White, WR: Playing with the a dog torturing, inaccurate, buffoon of a quarterback is going to be toxic for any receiver. Granted, White didn't help things with drops, but he finally has gotten a chance to play in a conventional offense this year, and already has career highs in receptions and receiving yards.
28. San Diego - Luis Castillo, DT/DE: Castillo has played well for a San Diego unit that is very talented. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury to a knee in early November and will miss a little more than a month.
29. Indianapolis - marlin
Jackson, CB: Jackson has been a solid contributor, playing both safety and cornerback through his career.30. Pittsburgh - Heath Miller, TE: Miller was a nice player for two seasons before breaking out this year. He will smash his previous high in catches (which had been 39), as he has already amassed 31 and tied his carer best with 6 TD receptions.
31. Philadelphia - Mike Patterson, DT: The Eagles love their defensive lineman, and Patterson is a very good one. He is having his best year so far this season, with 46 tackles and 2.5 sacks through 9 games.
32. New England - Logan Mankins, OG: Mankins is a starter on a unit that seemingly gives Tom Brady days to get rid of the ball.
Other notable selections
2nd Round: WR Reggie Brown (Philly), LB Lofa Tatupu (Seattle), CB Justin Miller (N.Y. Jets)
3rd Round: RB Frank Gore (San Fran), LB Channing Crowder (Miami), LB Kirk Morrison (Oakland), RB Maurice Clarett (Denver)
4th Round: RB Marion Barber (Dallas), RB Brandon Jacobs (N.Y. Giants), WR Jerome Mathis (Houston - Pro Bowler as return man), RB Darren Sproles (San Diego)
6th Round: QB Derek Anderson (Baltimore)
Also, two players, CB Darrent Williams - 2nd round, Denver, and RB Damien Nash - 5th round, Tennessee, passed away during this off-season.
