Sleeper NFL Free Agents

- Quarterback: Obviously, the pickings are awfully slim at this position. Good QB's rarely go anywhere, so let's just throw the name Cleo Lemon out there. He has some physical tools, and he probably wasn't as bad as you think he was for the Dolphins. Last season, Lemon had a passer rating of 71.0, completed 56% of his passes, and threw 6 TD's to 6 interceptions. But he also ran for four TD's and had no real help on the offensive line or at wide receiver. In his last three games he had a passer rating over 90 twice and threw 3 TD's and no picks.
- Running Back: Even though Aaron Stecker is 32, he can help teams as a primary back-up. Stecker has just 373 career rushing attempts, and performed well for the Saints in relief of the injured Reggie Bush. In weeks 15 and 16 he rushed for 100 and 95 yards, respectively.
- Wide Receiver: There are a number of good sleeper candidates at wideout, but none with more potential than Bryant Johnson, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals. He was drafted 17th overall in 2003, but has never lived up to that billing. Johnson has been overshadowed by Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin the past few years, but he has caught at least 35 balls in each of his five years in the league. Also, the 6'3" receiver will be just 27 next season, leaving him some time to get the most out of his career.
- Offensive Line: The guy that was going to occupy this spot was Indy's Ryan Lilja, but the Colts wisely signed him to a five year deal. So for now we'll go with his teammate, Jake Scott.
- Defensive Line: Saints DT Brian Young has been a very solid player for that squad since joining them in 2004 as a free agent. Young is 30 years old and coming off a season in which he only played 9 games but still got three sacks and a forced fumble.
- Linebacker: The Rams defense was terrible last year, but Brandon Chillar had a pretty nice season. The starter at strongside linebacker, Chillar collected 67 tackles, forced three fumbles, and had three sacks. The former fourth round pick is just 25 years old, so he still has room to improve.
- Defensive Back: If safety Mike Doss could manage to stay healthy, he could be a very productive player. He started off with a very solid rookie campaign in Indianapolis, collecting over 100 tackles with a pick and three forced fumbles. This year he was with the Vikings, but injury limited him to just 8 games. Doss has played just 14 games the last two seasons, but he'll only be 27 when next season rolls around and should he manage to get rid of the injury bug, he could be a solid contributor at safety.
