The Best College Football Players You May Not Know

The Heisman Trophy will be awarded on Saturday night, and all indications are that Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is the front-runner to win the award. We know all about the Tebow's, Chase Daniel's and Darren McFadden's of the college football world, but what about other, less heralded players who put up numbers similar to some Heisman contenders? Let's take a look at some of these athletes.
RB Kevin Smith, Central Florida: Smith has the most rushing yards in the nation, with 2,448, and the most rushing touchdowns in the nation as well, with 29. He needs 181 yards on the ground in Central Florida's game against Mississippi State in the Liberty Bowl to break the single season rushing record held by Barry Sanders.
RB Matt Forte, Tulane: Forte (pictured) is also having a great season on the ground with 2,127 rushing yards and 23 rushing TD's. Combined with his 282 receiving yards, Forte accounted for 2,413 total offensive yards, which is over half of the Green Wave's 4,751 yards on the season. Forte, a senior, will not be going to a bowl game to try and improve those numbers, as Tulane finished just 4-8.
QB Paul Smith, Tulsa: If I asked you which school led the nation in total offense, names like Hawaii, Missouri or Texas Tech might come up. But how about Tulsa? Because that's the correct answer, and the man who leads the attack is Paul Smith. The senior is second in passing yards, second in passing TD's, second in yards per attempt and seventh in passing efficiency in the nation. And though he is second to Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell in yards and TD's, he has attempted 145 fewer passes.
WR Jordy Nelson, Kansas State: Much has been made of Texas Tech freshman WR sensation Michael Crabtree, who leads the nation in catches and yard, but not many people know about Nelson. In fact, Nelson is second to Crabtree, and only three behind him, in catches, with 122. He is also second in receiving yards, with 1,606 to go along with 11 TD's. He averaged over 10 catches and 133 yards per game.
DE Greg Middleton, Indiana: You've probably heard about the exploits of Virginia's Chris Long, Ohio State's Vernon Gholston or USC's Lawrence Jackson. All great defensive lineman, and deserve their accolades. But the nation's leader in sacks is Middleton. He had a total of 16 for the Hoosiers, and also collected 50 tackles, defended four passes, recovered two fumbles, forced another and scored on a fumble return. The scary part for Big Ten foes? He's only a sophomore.
