Sports can be a great thing, offering people people the opportunity to grow closer by sharing time watching a game, throwing the football around, or maybe going to the driving range. But it can be ugly as well.
That has been evident in numerous ways over the years, but it's rare to cross over from hating what is happening on the field to hating someone personally. After all, it's only a game and consumes just a small minority of our lives. But with the recent passing of St. Louis Rams owner Georgia Frontiere, ugliness reared it's head.
In an article by Len Pasquarelli on ESPN.com detailing Frontiere's life, there is a comment section below, where readers can offer their unique points of view. Here is but a small sampling of some comments left under Pasquarelli's column:
"Did Georgia have a hand in Carroll's drowning? Heck, they have stories about spouses like this on A&E all the time." – DodgerDog2
"I think every football fan shares the same revulsion for parasites like Frontiere and Modell. Well at least Modell was never suspected of murder. AT least you'll be nice and warm now in the infernal regions. Enjoy it Georgia!!" – ovid451
"Frontiere was a gold digger and a murderer. She owned the Rams because strippers love the spotlight." – longliveP
"Loser as an owner, Despicable as a human. Ding Dong the Witch is dead." – KBmusic
"What complete trash she was. my grandmother was married once. and that's they way it should be." – playahatah66
"My friends and I have not stopped celebrating since we received the great news that the wicked witch is dead!" – PigskinPedro
True, Frontiere took the Rams out of L.A, and that was probably difficult for their fans. But remember, they moved to L.A. from Cleveland, and the hypocrisy shown from those in the city who love the Minneapolis Lakers and Brooklyn Dodgers is striking.
And this is a woman who did many more things to help people than she ever did to hurt them. She spent millions of dollars on charity work and countless hours of her time giving back.
Yet people revile her and hope she is in hell. Over a football team. Hey, we all love the NFL and sports, but if you're at the point of rooting for someone's death and inclusion in hell, maybe you should take a step back and take a good look at your life.
