Browns rookie cornerback, Eric Wright (pictured here), deflected a deep pass in brilliant coverage and punished several runners with blistering hits, last weekend. Wright's play falls into one of three categories of Things I Love about the NFL Preseason:
3. Free agents on new teams: Travis Henry had five carries for 27 yards and a touchdown, in his debut as Denver's starting tailback. Henry comes to the Broncos from Tennessee, after an outstanding 2006 campaign. I believe that Henry, who was cut by the Titans in March, has the perfect style for Denver's run-blocking scheme. As a fantasy football owner, I was eager to see if I was right about Henry, so Denver's Monday night game against San Francisco actually held my attention.
2. New TV announcers: Like late-round draft picks or college free agents, new TV announcers must also audition for their local networks. Watching guys, like former Cleveland quarterback Bernie Kosar, bungle their way through analysis is fairly entertaining.
1. Rookies hungry to prove their draft status: The aforementioned Eric Wright looks like a star, and he's eager to prove that he deserved to be a first-rounder (he was selected in round two of the nfl draft). After a brief holdout, Lions receiver, number 2 overall pick, Calvin Johnson lived up to his hype with two acrobatic catches for a 22.5 yards-per-catch average. There's nothing better in an NFL preseason game for hometown fans than seeing their top picks play well. It gives every football fan new hope – even Detroit fans.
